Recreation Grounds

Important changes relating to the exercise of dogs on the recreation grounds

Harleston has a lovely recreation ground with plenty of facilities for the community to enjoy.  Unfortunately, there has been increasing problems with regards to dog fouling, and on occasions, problems caused by dogs not on leads. The recreation ground should be there for the benefit of the whole community facilitating a place for recreation and relaxation. There are various sporting clubs that use the recreation ground, as well as organised events and it is unfair to them and the council’s ground staff to expect them to clear up dog waste. The recreation committee has therefore made the decision to enforce the existing bylaws for the recreation ground in relation to the exercising of dogs.

From 1st May 2014 the following restrictions on the exercising of dogs on the grounds will come into force;

Dogs must be kept under close control of their owners/person responsible for them through the use of restraints (leads) at all times whilst on the recreation grounds.

Dogs are restricted from entering areas of the recreation grounds that are designated play and sports areas to include;

  • the football pitch and its immediate surrounds and buildings
  • Family Inclusive Sports Area
  • BMX track
  • all play areas, green gym and basketball court.

Restricted zones will be identified at each main entry point to the recreation ground and the play area zone will be identified by ground line markings.

Initially for a trial period, the enclosed area in between the tennis court and the family inclusive sports area will be allocated as a section where people can let their dogs off the lead in a safe environment.  This area will be clearly marked with a notice at the entrance of the enclosure.

All owners/persons walking the dogs remain responsible for the immediate clearance of dog waste.

It is requested that those responsible for dogs accept and understand the reasons for these restrictions and abide by the regulations for the benefit of the whole community.
